Το Ινστιτούτο Βιοιατρικής Έρευνας & Τεχνολογίας (ΙΒΕΤ) του Κέντρου Έρευνας Τεχνολογίας & Ανάπτυξης Θεσσαλίας (Κ.Ε.ΤΕ.Α.Θ.), στo πλαίσιο εκτέλεσης του ερευνητικού έργου του εργαστηρίου Νευρογενετικής «Κλινική και Φαρμακολογική μελέτη της in situ διεγχειρητικής χορήγησης του σωματοστατινεργικού αναλόγου οκτρεοτίδη σε ασθενείς με αναπλαστικά αστροκυττώματα και πολύμορφα γλοιοβλαστώματα» ενδιαφέρεται να προσλάβει προσωπικό με σύμβαση ανάθεσης έργου. West Nile Virus identified in samples from Central Macedonia

From early July through October 2010, a total of 261 laboratory confirmed cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infections in humans were reported, in central Macedonia as well as in the district of Larissa (Northern Greece). Of these, 191 patients presented with neuroinvasive symptoms and 34 deaths have been reported (1). A WNV lineage 2 strain was molecularly detected in a European magpie and was identified and characterized by the research group of Mr. Charalambos Billinis DVM, PhD, Associate Professor at the Laboratory of Microbiology and Parasitology Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (University of Thessaly, Karditsa, Greece) and Head of Biomed’s Laboratory of Zoonoses Research.  This corvid was hunted in central Macedonia in September 2010, during the recent WNV outbreak in humans. This is the 1st molecular detection of WNV lineage 2 in wild birds in Greece. Phylogenetic analysis of a 604-nt sequence (partial NS5 genomic region) revealed high homology of our strain with the Hungarian and Austrian lineage 2 strains detected in previous years in birds of prey. Apart from our strain, a strain of WNV lineage 2 (146 nt) was detected in 2 pools of mosquitoes in nearby areas in the same period by Dr Papa (2), supporting the hypothesis that WNV lineage 2 was the etiologic agent of the WNV outbreak in humans in 2010. There is currently an ongoing sequencing of our strain that will allow us to draw more conclusions regarding the recent WNV lineage 2 outbreaks in Europe. We are continuing our study collecting wild bird samples dating from the recent outbreak in Greece till now, and performing molecular and serologic surveillance.

The neurosurgery department of the University Hospital of Larissa in collaboration with the Institute of Biomedical Research and Technology (BIOMED) /CERETETH, organized an one-day conference on the topic “Surgical treatment of cervical spine-related diseases”. Invited speaker was Dr. Mehmet Zileli, Professor of Neurosurgery from the Ege University of Izmir as well as distinguished greek neurosurgeons from other academic greek institutions. The one-day conference -addressed mainly to Neurosurgeons, orthopedics, rheumatologists, physical therapists and everyone else interested – was carried out on January 21^st 2011 in the new building of the University of Thessaly Medical School, Viopolis

It is known that the cervical spine diseases are quite frequent and often require surgical treatment. They can be a result of trauma or degeneration while there is an increase in the cervical spine diseases incidence over the last decade that can be attributed to the western society way of life. This companied with the relatively young age of patients has obvious socio-economic dimensions.

Treatment of these patients requires exceptional knowledge of regional anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the neck and often requires treatment from a team of specialized doctors and other health professionals. The application of newer imaging techniques based on CT-scan and MRI, the development of high technology neuronavigation systems, in combination with the use of electrophysiological recording and neuron-stimulation, give the opportunity to many patients, that only a few years ago were considered condemned, to return  to normal activity and life without disabilities.
