The Institute of Biomedical Research & Technology (BIOMED) is one of the four Institutes of the Centre for Research and Technology -Thessaly (CE.RE.TE.TH.) which was founded on the 23rd of January of 2006.

CERETETH is a non-profit organization constituting a legal entity of private law that at present resides in the city of Volos. With regard to the financial and administrative activities, as well as the legality of acts and actions of its administrational bodies, BIOMED is supervised by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GSRT) of the Ministry of Development.

More specifically CE.RE.TE.TH. consists of the following Research Institutes staffed with internationally recognized scientific personnel:

  1. Institute of Biomedical Research & Technology (BIOMED) in Larissa
  2. Institute of Technology and Management of Agricultural Ecosystems (ITEMA) in Karditsa
  3. Institute of Human Performance & Rehabilitation (PERFOTECH) in Trikala
  4. Institute of Mechatronics (IMTRONICS) in Volos

The fist director of BIOMED is Dr.Konstantinos N. Malizos, Professor of Orthopaedics and Dean of the Medical School of the University of Thessaly.

BIOMED focuses both on basic and applied research with the ultimate goal of production of innovative results, which can be used for the discovery of novel drugs or diagnostic methods for the early diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.

Currently  at BIOMED there are five  main working research laboratories:

1. Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Genetics

2. Laboratory of Investigative Medicine

3. Laboratory of  Zoonoses Research

4. Laboratory of  Neurogenetics

5. Laboratory of  Molecular Microbiology

At the same time, three (3) collaborating research groups are also active at BIOMED:

1.  Research group for the Study of  Musculoskeletal System

2.  Research group of Biomedical Informatics

3.  Research group of Biochemistry and Cellular Homeostasis (BIOCELHOM)

BIOMED’s development aims at Excellence, while its main ambition is to become an incubator of innovative research activities as well as pole of development of Greek and worldwide recognition.
